World Athletics: Neeraj Chopra becomes the most written-about athlete in 2022

 
Neeraj Chopra, an Indian javelin thrower who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, replaced Jamaican legend Usain Bolt as the track and field athlete that received the most media attention in 2022, according to the World Athletics. World Athletics, the world`s governing organisation for athletics, used data compiled by media analysis firm Unicepta.
 
Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo Olympics men’s javelin champion, led the way with 812 articles ahead of the Jamaican women’s sprint trio of Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah (751 articles), 100m world champion Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce (698 articles) and 200m world champion Shericka Jackson (679 articles). Usain Bolt, the world record holder in 100m and 200m men’s sprint, comes in fourth in the list with 574 mentions. The Jamaican, who is now retired, had previously topped the annual list for most written-about athlete for years.

  • Neeraj Chopra had a very successful 2022. He won the silver medal at the World Athletic Championships 2022 in Eugene, Oregon, becoming only the second Indian to win a worlds medal after Anju Bobby George’s bronze in the women’s long jump in 2003.
  • Neeraj Chopra also became the first athlete from India to win the Diamond League final this year.
  • The javelin star’s personal best of 89.94m, the current national record, also came this year at the Stockholm Diamond League.

India hockey team win`s Women`s FIH Nations Cup 2022

The first-ever FIH Nations Cup was played in Valencia, Spain, and was won by the Indian women`s hockey team, captained by Savita Punia, who defeated Spain 1-0 in the championship game.

 

The winning goal was scored by Gurjit Kaur of India. The inaugural FIH Nations cup was held in Valencia, Spain from 11-17 December 2022.

 

 

India and Spain had played in the FIH women’s Hockey Pro League 2021-22 season as replacement teams after pull-outs by Australia and New Zealand due to COVID-19 related issues.

Jaipur Pink Panthers won 9th Pro Kabaddi League title

By defeating a valiant Puneri Paltan team in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 9 Final by a score of 33-29, Jaipur Pink Panthers captured their second PKL title.

 

After Patna, Jaipur Pink Panthers, the league’s first-ever winners, are currently only the second team to win multiple titles. The tournament was played across Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad while the playoffs were played in Mumbai.

 

 

Jaipur Pink Panthers team is currently led by Sunil Kumar Malik and coached by Sanjeev Baliyan. The team is owned by Abhishek Bachchan.
